Talent Development Squad (TDS)
The Talent Development Squad (TDS) is a high performance training environment for motivated water polo athletes seeking additional training beyond club and representative programs.
TDS bridges the gap between club competition and elite pathways, providing access to high level coaching, structured sessions, and performance focused development. Training challenges athletes technically, tactically, physically and mentally, while reinforcing the habits and standards required at higher levels of the game.
This is not a replacement for club or representative water polo, but a complementary program designed to accelerate athlete development. TDS is for athletes who are serious about their water polo and want to explore how far it can take them, whether that is state or Australian representation, the AWL, NCAA college water polo, or professional opportunities overseas.
Eligibility:
Male & Female 18&U athletes – Born 2008, 2009 and 2010 (2011 on request and subject to availability)
Only 20 positions available for each gender
Selection process:
Selection will be based on a range of factors, including current ability as demonstrated through the highest representative level achieved and local club performance, as well as age, future development potential, and positional balance within the squad.
Athletes are required to complete an application to be considered for a place in the program. The application will ask a range of questions to collect contact details and performance related information.
Former TDS athlete and current Aussie Sharks player Matt Wilson.

“I really believe there’s a need for more specialised training in the ACT, similar to what I had access to as a junior. I’m glad to see the program launching again after stopping in 2019, as it will give committed athletes greater access to a high level training environment, which is essential if you want to reach your potential in the sport. I know it helped me gain a college scholarship and selection in an Australian Junior Team.”

“I’ve been speaking with Matt for some time about the opportunity to come to Australia to play and coach. I know many other Pacific athletes have done this before me, and I’m really excited about the chance to play, coach, and experience everything Australia has to offer. ”

“I ran the TDS program for more than a decade from 2007, and during that time we developed many quality athletes who went on to play overseas in college programs and in Europe, with a number also selected in Australian junior squads. That’s something I’m really proud of, but just as important has been seeing so many athletes go on to succeed beyond water polo. I hope that relaunching the program with a motivated coaching group will create even more opportunities for driven athletes.”

Notable Achievements:
Member of the CWPA 68 Women's Team
Member of the CWPA Gold Medal winning Pan Pac team
“I loved my time as a TDS athlete (2010 to 2015). It gave us access to a higher level of training than we received at club level, and some of my fondest memories come from training and touring with the program, including winning a medal with the Under 20s team at Pan Pacs. I was really happy to get the call to return and coach in the program. ”

6–8 Performance Testing & Monitoring
As part of the Talent Development Squad program, athletes will undertake regular 6–8 Performance testing and monitoring, providing objective data to support individual development throughout the season.
Athletes will use the 6–8 Sports app to track performance through a combination of skill-based testing and in-game performance analytics. Each athlete receives detailed data, including combine-style test results and game performance metrics, allowing coaches and athletes to identify strengths, target areas for improvement, and monitor progress over time.
This testing framework supports the high-performance objectives of TDS by:
Informing individual athlete feedback and development plans
Tracking physical, technical, and game-related progress across the program
Providing clear benchmarks aligned with age and gender standards
Athletes will also be able to compare results against national and international peers in the same age group, helping to contextualise performance and guide training focus. Where relevant, this data can assist athletes exploring elite pathways such as state and national programs, the AWL, NCAA opportunities, and overseas competitions.
